Facts About Type 1 Diabetes

Learning about Type 1 diabetes facts makes you aware on the most important information about the disease. If you are diabetic or you know anyone who has, the first thing you do is to learn about the disease; its symptoms, its cure and its medications. A lot of times this knowledge serves as your defense in keeping the disease under control and not allowing it to get worse.type 1 diabetes

It shows that Type 1 diabetes is likely to develop in children and young adults. That is why it was referred before as juvenile diabetes. It is also known as diabetes mellitus type 1 and insulin-dependent diabetes. The body with Type 1 diabetes does not have the ability to produce insulin. Without insulin, the sugar level in the blood and urine increase.

Until now there are specific causes for Type 1 diabetes. But medical experts believed that autoimmunity and genetics play a huge role in developing the disease. There are studies that show that the disease will likely to happen to those who live in colder places. The viral infections from the cold can initiate the disease.

Type 1 diabetes is not as common as Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs to young adults and children even if they are not overweight. Though screening is not recommended for this type of diabetes, it is necessary for those who have immediate family that has the disease, like parents or siblings.

There are studies that suggest that breastfeeding will decrease the risk of developing Type 1 diabetes in the future. But it has not been proven yet. There are now immunosuppressive drugs available that can stop the destruction of beta cells in the body and help in preserving insulin production.

Various treatments for Type 1 diabetes can now be easily attained. It can be treated with insulin replacement therapy which is administered through subcutaneous injection or insulin pumps. Monitoring the blood sugar level is done many times every day. For worst cases of Type 1 diabetes, pancreas transplantation may be needed. But this treatment is considered to be dangerous. Another treatments are islet cell transplantation and stem cell educator therapy.

If Type 1 diabetes is left untreated it can result to coma due to diabetic ketoacidosis. Diabetic ketoacidosis can cause cerebral edema or the presence of too much liquid in the brain.

Common symptoms for this type of diabetes are extreme thirst and hunger, frequent urination, dry mouth, fatigue and sudden weight loss.

Just like Type 2 diabetes, it is important to manage your eating habit well. Focus on foods that are low in sugar and carbohydrates. Always maintain a well- balanced meal every time. You do not have to stick to foods that have no flavors since these days there are a lot of natural sweeteners and sugar substitutes that can make your food tastes good and healthy. Always ask your doctor about the foods and nutrients that you need to include in your diet.
