Acne is something that almost everybody deals with. It’s ugly and painful; it is resilient to treatment; and it can affect the skin for years after adolescence has passed. There is a lot of debate surrounding the causes of acne as well as the best treatments for acne. The truth is, however, that everybody’s skin is different. No one person can guarantee that an effective acne regimen will work on another skin. Still, there are some habits and activities that may be contributing to your bad skin problems. If you have persistent acne that has been resistant to all different types of treatment, your acne may be caused by one of the following four behaviors. Changing or eliminating these four behaviors may help you achieve clearer skin.
Touching Your Skin
One of the worst mistakes you can make for the health of your skin is to frequently touch your face. People who have acne often habitually touch their faces to ascertain the seriousness of their pimples. They may try to hide a bad blemish by holding their hands over the affected area. What they are really doing, however, is worsening the problem.
Our hands are two of the dirtiest parts of our entire bodies. Hands are covered with germs, dirt, dust, bacteria, and other contaminants that don’t belong anywhere near the face. When you touch your face, these oils and contaminants are transferred directly to the pores. Touching your face can lead to irritation of the pores and even cause serious infections which lead to acne cysts and scarring. Touching a pimple is just as bad. Attempting to squeeze or pop a pimple with the fingers is something that should be avoided at all cost. In the least, extraction of a pimple should be performed with hands that have been freshly washed. Failure to keep hands clean and away from the face can exacerbate acne problems.
Eating the Wrong Foods
Without a doubt, the foods that you eat have a direct correlation with the health of your skin. Too often, we fill our bodies with empty calories, excessive amounts of sugar, trans fats, sodium, and other irritants that can cause inflammation of the skin. Food items that have little to no nutritional value may not necessarily cause acne, but they are certainly doing nothing to aid in the treatment of acne.
Instead of consuming empty calories from junk food, you can improve the health of your skin by consuming fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, good protein, and high amounts of omega-3s found in food items like fish and nuts. An increase in the intake of vitamins and minerals can give skin that “healthy glow” that everyone craves.
Drinking the Wrong Beverages
If the beverage you drink most frequently isn’t water, you’ve developed a habit that may be exacerbating your acne issues. Water helps to purify the body and remove toxins naturally. Avoid these beverages that can worsen acne:
- Carbonated beverages
- Sugary beverages
- Alcohol and Spirits
- Highly Acidic Fruit Juices
Skipping the Moisturizer
Many acne sufferers don’t want to use a moisturizer because they assume it will make their skin oilier and more prone to acne. The opposite, in fact, is true. Unless you moisturize, your skin will become excessively dry. The body compensates for this by overproducing oil to replace the oil lost through regular facial cleansing.
These four bad habits may not fix your acne problem completely, but they will definitely help to reduce the frequency of your outbreaks and make your acne a little easier to manage.
